In case there was ever any doubt about it, it's looking more and more like David Cutcliffe will be finishing his coaching career at Duke.

Duke announced a contract extension for Cutcliffe on Monday, and his new deal runs through June 2021.

"Simply put, Duke University is terribly honored and very proud to have one of the truly pinnacle football coaches in the country leading the Blue Devil program into the next decade," said Duke athletic director Kevin White.

"To be sure, what Coach Cutcliffe has accomplished over nine seasons at Duke is nothing short of extraordinary! With David's innovation, vision, passion, not to mention well-seasoned expertise, our student-athletes will continue to enjoy, both academically and athletically, the very best – actually the 'gold standard' -- experience within the broader enterprise that is college football."

Cutcliffe has been at Duke for nine seasons and has gone 52-61 overall, 25-47 in the ACC. Now, on the surface, that record might not seem to warrant a contract extension, but it's important to put things in the proper perspective.

Cutcliffe has won 52 games at Duke in nine seasons. From 2000-07, the eight seasons before Cutcliffe showed up, Duke won 10 games total. It's also a program that had been to eight bowl games in its history before Cutcliffe, and he took the Blue Devils to four straight bowl games from 2012-15.

So toss in the fact that Cutcliffe has also won ACC Coach of the Year twice, and you're looking at one of the greatest coaches in program history.
