Player Outlook
Nick Gordon looked set to take a more prominent role in the Twins lineup last season but struggled early in the season and then suffered a season-ending broken leg May 17. Gordon went from a light hitting utility player to adding power in 2022 by slugging .427 and hitting nine home runs with 28 doubles, which helped make him an above average hitter with a 111 wRC+. He entered spring training with a shot at winning the everyday DH role or becoming a regular in the lineup while alternating positions. He hit just .127 with a .343 OPS in April and subsequently was stuck on the bench. He then fouled a ball off his shin in mid-May and broke his right tibia. He was able to play in a rehab assignment late in September but wasn't added to the postseason roster. Traded to Miami in February, he'll enter spring training needing to fight for a utility role as his chance for an everyday job may have passed him by.

  • Marlins' Nick Gordon: Heads to bench Thursday

Gordon is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rockies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The lefty-hitting Gordon usually exits the lineup when the Marlins oppose southpaws, but he'll hit the bench Thursday with a right-hander (Peter Lambert) taking the hill for Colorado. Gordon's move to the bench comes while he's gone 2-for-30 at the dish over his last 10 games, dropping his batting average to .167 for the season. Dane Myers will get the start in left field Thursday, and he could soon displace Gordon as the Marlins' preferred option at the position if Gordon's struggles at the dish continue.

  • Marlins' Nick Gordon: Nabs first 2024 steal

Gordon went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Nationals. The 28-year-old continues to hold down a strong-side platoon role in left field, but Gordon's done little to earn it. The steal was his first of the season, and through 61 plate appearances he's slashing just .211/.246/.404 with three homers, five runs and 12 RBI. The Marlins have the worst record in the NL at 6-21, and it may not be long before struggling veterans with limited upside like Gordon get shoved aside in favor of prospects like Victor Mesa.

Gordon went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's loss to Atlanta. The 28-year-old took Dylan Lee deep in the sixth inning, giving Miami a 7-5 lead that would slip away late. His career high is only nine homers, set over 138 games with the Twins in 2022.
