Player Outlook
In a disappointing season for the Yankees as a team, Gleyber Torres was a bright spot, posting his best campaign since the 2019 juiced-ball year. He shaved his strikeout rate to a career-low 14.6% over a career-high 672 plate appearances. Torres added just one home run to his 2022 total even while seeing an additional 100 plate appearances, but he's now reached 24 homers in four of his five full seasons -- not game-changing power, but nothing to sneeze at either. Add in double-digit steals each of the last three seasons and Torres is back on the right track, having put his age-24 struggles in 2021 in the rearview mirror. His defense is another story, as shortstop is fully off the table at this point and his marks at second base leave a lot to be desired. Those issues could affect his playing time eventually. For now, Torres will remain an everyday presence in the top half of the Yankee lineup.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Managing groin tightness

Torres exited Friday's game against the Red Sox due to right groin tightness. Torres suffered a similar injury to his right groin a few weeks ago, and he seems to have aggravated the issue while legging out an infield single during Friday's contest. The Yankees don't have any plans in place to take him in for imaging at the moment, which suggests the team doesn't believe his latest flareup is anything too severe. However, it remains possible the 27-year-old sits out Saturday's contest as a precaution.

Torres went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 16-5 rout of Toronto. Torres was held out of action Wednesday and Thursday following a prolonged slump, and the time off appeared to serve him well. The second baseman contributed to the team's offensive explosion Friday with a two-run blast in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly in the ninth. • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Riding bench again Thursday

Torres is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Toronto. Yankees manager Aaron Boone had intimated after not starting Torres on Wednesday that the second baseman might get an additional day off to regroup, and the skipper has done just that. • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Takes seat after poor game Tuesday

Torres is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Mets. For the second game in a row, Torres was held hitless Tuesday in the Yankees' 9-7 loss, leaving him in a 2-for-29 slump at the dish over his last nine games. To make matters worse, Torres committed an error at second base and also didn't run out a grounder at full speed in the eighth inning, with the latter play not escaping manager Aaron Boone's attention, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Boone indicated that Torres is doing OK physically, but the skipper thought a day on the bench could be beneficial for the 27-year-old while he's in the midst of a rough patch. Oswaldo Cabrera will pick up the start at second base in place of Torres.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Cranks first home run

Torres went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles. Torres led off the sixth inning with a 418-foot shot to center field off Keegan Akin, cutting the Yankees' deficit to 7-2. While it didn't ultimately impact the final score, the home run was certainly a weight off of Torres' shoulders -- he'd gone 32 games without a long ball to start the campaign, a homerless streak of 53 regular-season games if you go back to Torres' last home run Sept. 7. The 27-year-old second baseman is now slashing a disappointing .218/.295/.274 to open the year with 15 runs scored, seven RBI and three stolen bases.
