We are not sure which is the bigger surprise with Jose Siri: the fact he stole fewer bases in 2023 with the new rules and more playing time than 2022 or his final homer total this past season. The Rays acquired Siri to be the replacement for Kiermaier's defense, and he mostly held up that part of the bargain. What they didn't know they were getting was someone who could hit 25 homers in a tougher home park than he had previously played in. Siri strikes out with the best of them on an annual basis with both whiff rates and strikeout rates in the bottom 10th percentile last season. He doubles down on that with an anemic walk rate which makes him a problem in both batting average as well as OBP leagues. Through two full seasons at the big league level, he has hit .205 on fastballs with a 33% whiff rate on those pitches and that is how the league will continue to pitch him. This is an 8th or 9th place hitter whose defense keeps him in the lineup.
