  • Robert Gsellman: Cut by Nationals

The Nationals released Gsellman on Wednesday, Byron Kerr of MLB.com reports. Gsellman has spent all season at Triple-A Rochester after failing to make the Nationals' roster out of spring training. He's accumulated an 8.75 ERA and 1.78 WHIP through 36 innings in the minors and will now look to secure another deal elsewhere. The 30-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022, and a return to MLB is unlikely to come until he shows significant improvement.

  • Nationals' Robert Gsellman: Reassigned to minor-league camp

The Nationals reassigned Gsellman to minor-league camp Sunday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Gsellman signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals at the end of January. The pitcher left affiliated ball in 2022 to pursue a career in Japan. Overseas, he had a 4.32 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 139.2 innings. When he signed with the Nationals, it was thought the 30-year-old would likely start at Triple-A Rochester.

  • Nationals' Robert Gsellman: Signs MiLB deal with Nats

Gsellman signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Gsellman left affiliated ball in 2022 to pursue a career overseas in Japan, where he recorded a 4.32 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 139.2 total innings. The 30-year-old righty will likely head to Triple-A Rochester and serve as organizational depth as he attempts to work his way back to the majors.

  • Robert Gsellman: Continuing career in Japan

Gsellman signed a one-year contract Sunday with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. After spending the last 12 years in affiliated ball, the 29-year-old Gsellman will head overseas to continue his career. Gsellman was most recently a member of the Cubs organization, making eight relief appearances for the big club and 10 appearances (nine starts) for Triple-A Iowa before he was released in July. Gsellman owns a 4.60 ERA and 10.1 K-BB% across 366 innings over parts of seven seasons in the big leagues.

  • Cubs' Robert Gsellman: Designated for assignment

Gsellman was designated for assignment Monday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Gsellman made eight appearances during his time on the roster, struggling to a 4.70 ERA while striking out just 14.1 percent of opposing batters. He's been a passable reliever for most of his career, so it's possible he gets claimed off waivers, but he's unlikely to find high-leverage work anywhere.

  • Cubs' Robert Gsellman: Secures three-inning save

Gsellman earned a save during Tuesday's 11-4 win over the Reds after giving up two runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk over three innings. The right-hander entered during the seventh inning with the Cubs holding an eight-run lead, and he closed out the game to record an unconventional save. Gsellman has appeared in six games since Chicago selected his contract in early May, and he has a 5.54 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB over 12 innings.

  • Cubs' Robert Gsellman: Contract selected by Cubs

Gsellman's contract was selected by the Cubs on Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Gsellman will offer the Cubs a multi-inning relief option. He posted a 3.77 ERA in 28.2 innings of relief for the Mets last season but struck out just 14.3 percent of opposing batters. Locke St. John was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot.

  • Cubs' Robert Gsellman: Sent to Triple-A

The Cubs reassigned Gsellman to Triple-A Iowa on Monday. He was one of five players sent to the minors Tuesday as the Cubs narrowed down their group at big-league camp ahead of Opening Day. Gsellman, who joined the Cubs on a minor-league deal earlier this month, produced a 3.77 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 28.2 innings out of the Mets bullpen in 2021.

  • Cubs' Robert Gsellman: Unlikely to make roster

Gsellman will likely begin the year in the minors, though he could get called up later if he pitches well there, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. Gsellman appeared in 17 games for the Mets last season and logged 119.2 innings for New York working as a starter back in 2017, so he certainly has plenty of MLB experience. However, he's on a minor-league deal with the Cubs, and the team doesn't seem to have an open MLB bullpen spot for the 28-year-old. Gsellman could work his way into the mix at some point, though his fantasy value seems fairly limited.

  • Cubs' Robert Gsellman: Signs with Cubs

Gsellman signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Thursday that includes an invite to big-league spring training, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Gsellman recorded a 3.77 ERA with the Mets last season, but that came in just 28.2 innings as he was limited by a lat injury. It also came with a very low 14.3 percent strikeout rate. He'll compete for a spot in the Cubs' bullpen ahead of the 2022 campaign.

  • Robert Gsellman: Parts ways with Mets

Gsellman was non-tendered by the Mets on Tuesday, making him a free agent, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Gsellman has been a significant bullpen piece for New York over the past few years, but he appeared in only 17 games last season while dealing with a torn lat muscle. The 28-year-old had a 3.77 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB across 28.2 innings, and he shouldn't have too much difficulty latching on elsewhere, at least on a minor-league deal.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Returns Saturday

Gsellman (lat) was activated from the 60-day injured list Saturday. Gsellman last took the mound for the Mets on June 19. However, he began a rehab assignment Sept. 6 and appeared in six games, totaling 6.1 innings while allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and three walks. Gsellman is likely to serve as a low-leverage reliever across the Mets' final two games; it's possible that he could work multiple frames.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Could return for final series

Gsellman (lat) joined the Mets' taxi squad ahead of the team's season-ending series in Atlanta and could be reinstated from the 60-day injured list this weekend, Anthony Rieber of Newsday reports. After being shut down in late June with a torn right lat, Gsellman was cleared to begin a rehab assignment just over two months later. He's since made six rehab appearances between two affiliates, covering 6.1 innings in total while allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and three walks. If activated this weekend, Gsellman would likely serve as a low-leverage reliever for New York.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Initiates rehab assignment

Gsellman (lat) made the first appearance of his rehab assignment at Low-A St. Lucie on Sunday, recording two outs while allowing three runs on three hits. Gsellman threw 12 of his 17 pitches for strikes in the rehab start, but that was about the only positive takeaway in his first outing in affiliated ball since June 19. Because he's been on the shelf for nearly three months with a right lat strain, Gsellman will likely require several more rehab appearances at multiple affiliates before the Mets bring him back from the 60-day injured list.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Shifts to 60-day IL

Gsellman (lat) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The 27-year-old landed on the injured list at the start of the week with a torn right lat and won't throw for six weeks, so the move to the 60-day IL won't affect his return timeline. Gsellman will be eligible for activation in late August.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Won't throw for six weeks

Gsellman (lat) won't throw for six weeks, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Gsellman hit the injured list Monday with a torn right lat and was reported to be out for 6-to-8 weeks. That time frame now seems overly optimistic, as he'll need several weeks to build his arm strength back up even if he's cleared to throw immediately at the six-week mark. A late-August return now appears to be on the optimistic end of his timeline.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Out 6-8 weeks with torn lat

Gsellman is expected to be sidelined 6-to-8 weeks with a torn right lat, Steve Gelbs of SportsNet New York reports. The 27-year-old was placed on the injured list earlier in the day and is now facing an extended absence dur to the injury. It's unclear if Gsellman will require surgery, but he'll be unavailable until at least early August if the initial timeline holds throughout his recovery.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Officially hits injured list

Gsellman (lat) landed on the injured list as expected Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The move was made retroactive to Sunday, meaning he'll be eligible to return next Wednesday. It's not yet clear if that's at all possible, however, with the Mets yet to specify how serious the strain is or when he's expected to return. Jeff McNeil (hamstring) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Shut down with lat issue

The Mets plan to place Gsellman on the 10-day injured list Monday with a lat injury, Andy Martino of SportsNet New York reports. Gsellman presumably picked up the injury coming out of his most recent relief appearance in Washington on Saturday, when he gave up a run on three hits over two innings. New York will likely officially announce Gsellman's move to the IL shortly before the first game of Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Stuck with loss as opener

Gsellman (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals, giving up one run on three hits over two innings. He didn't strike out or walk a batter. Working as the opener, Gsellman tossed 13 of 22 pitches for strikes and served up a solo shot to Kyle Schwarber before giving way to Sean Reid-Foley. The Mets didn't get on the board until the seventh inning in the 6-2 loss, saddling Gsellman with the decision. The right-hander has tossed at least two innings in five of his last six appearances, and he'll continue to give the team some length in the bullpen even if his 3.71 ERA and 15:7 K:BB through 26.2 innings don't make a strong case for high-leverage work.
