Player Outlook
The Cardinals picked up Richard Palacios from the Guardians in a trade in June and promoted him to the majors in August. The 26-year-old proved to be a spark down the stretch of St. Louis' lost season, collecting an .823 OPS with six home runs and a couple stolen bases in 102 plate appearances. The elite contact ability Palacios showed in the minors carried over, as well, as he struck out at just a 10.8 percent clip. Palacios also drew walks at a 15.7 percent rate last season at the Triple-A level, but that part didn't translate in the majors (5.9 percent). The 14 homers Palacios hit between the majors and minors in 2023 nearly doubled his pro total coming into the year, and his poor quality of contact at both levels suggests it's unlikely to be repeated. Palacios looks like a viable bench piece, though, with his contact skills and ability to play second base and all three outfield spots.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Notches three hits

Palacios went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base during Tuesday's win over the Royals. Palacios singled and came around to score in the second inning to give the Rays an early 1-0 lead. Following a 2.5-hour rain delay, he then lined an RBI double into right field in the sixth frame. Palacios went 2-for-4 with an RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 11-3 win over the Mariners. He had a huge seventh inning, hitting an RBI single, stealing second and coming around to score for the third time in the contest. Palacios has tallied three multi-hit efforts and two steals in his past four games and is now hitting .249 with four home runs, 16 RBI and 12 stolen bases over 227 plate appearances in 2024.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Swipes 11th bag

Palacios went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates. The 27-year-old began the day on the bench, but when Amed Rosario (face) got hit by a 99.6 mph Jared Jones fastball in the first inning, Palacios entered the lineup and ended up being the only Ray with multiple hits in the game. Brandon Lowe (toe) also went down Saturday and figures to miss some time, so Palacios could move into a full-time role in the short term -- Tampa Bay isn't scheduled to face a left-handed starter until it begins a series against the Nationals next weekend. On the season, Palacios is slashing .237/.332/.333 with four homers, 14 RBI, 31 runs and 11 steals in 64 contests.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Sitting out Thursday

Palacios is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Minnesota, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 27-year-old has gone just 4-for-35 at the plate so far in June.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: On bench against lefty again

Palacios is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays are facing a lefty (Braxton Garrett) for the third straight game, and the lefty-hitting Palacios has been on the bench for each of those contests. Palacios appears to be a strict platoon player for Tampa Bay, with right-handed hitters Harold Ramirez, Jonny DeLuca or Amed Rosario typically replacing him in the lineup when the Rays face left-handed pitchers.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Heads to bench in Lowe's return

Palacios is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Palacios has served as a strong-side platoon player in right field for much of the season, but his opportunities in the outfield could be more scarce moving forward with Josh Lowe (hamstring) coming off the 10-day injured list Monday after Jonny DeLuca was activated just three days earlier. Perhaps in preparation to the incoming logjam in the outfield, Palacios has been given more exposure to second base, where he started both of the past two games. He could end up forming a platoon at that spot with the right-handed-hitting Amed Rosario, though it'll be Rosario who gets the starting nod Monday versus White Sox righty Mike Clevinger. Palacios has been one of the better-performing hitters for the Rays this season, posting an .87O OPS while going 5-for-5 in stolen-base attempts across his 95 plate appearances.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Steals fourth bag

Palacios went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base Wednesday against the Brewers. Palacios was the lone offensive bright spot for the Rays on Wednesday, and he now has three multi-hit efforts in his last five starts. He also stole his third base in that span Wednesday, bringing his total to four on the season. Palacios has a large-side platoon role in right field and has maintained an impressive 163 wRC+ and .395 wOBA across 87 plate appearances on the campaign.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Sitting against lefty

Palacios is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers. The lefty-hitting Palacios will exit the lineup with southpaw Tarik Skubal on the mound for Detroit, enabling Amed Rosario to get another turn as the Rays' starting right fielder. Palacios and Rosario have largely been deployed in a platoon this season, but the Rays have been making more of an effort to get Rosario regular at-bats against right-handed pitching while he's been swinging a hot bat of late. For his part, Palacios has done well to ward off Rosario thus far, as he enters Monday's contest with a .304/.429/.478 slash line across 56 plate appearances.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Slugs second homer

Palacios went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and a second run scored in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Yankees. The 26-year-old took Clarke Schmidt deep in the sixth inning for the game's first run, Palacios' his second long ball of the year. He has been on a tear of late in his strong-side platoon role, collecting multiple hits in four of his last six starts while batting .400 (10-for-25) with two doubles and a homer. Palacios' performance could have the Rays re-thinking their outfield alignment, as Josh Lowe (oblique) began his rehab assignment Friday playing center field instead of right field, suggesting it's Jose Siri who might lose his spot when Lowe returns, and not the Palacios-Amed Rosario tandem.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Gets day off vs. lefty

Palacios is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels. Palacios will hit the bench for the third time in four days, with all three of his absences coming against left-handed pitchers. He continues to hold down a strong-side platoon role in the corner outfield, but he'll give way to Amed Rosario on Wednesday.

  • Rays' Richie Palacios: Productive in Tuesday's win

Palacios went 2-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-innings win over the Angels. The 26-year-old outfielder produced his third multi-hit performance in his last four starts, a stretch in which Palacios is batting .368 (7-for-19). Despite the surge, time is ticking on his stint as a regular part of the Tampa Bay lineup, as Josh Lowe (oblique) is set to begin a rehab assignment later this week. Through 44 plate appearances this season, Palacios is slashing .270/.386/.378 with one homer, one steal, two RBI and six runs.

Palacios is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
