  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Recalled by Arizona

The Diamondbacks recalled Castellanos from Triple-A Reno on Friday. It'll be the second stint in the majors for Castellanos this season after his contract was selected by Arizona on June 6. The 28-year-old right-hander made one appearance for the big club June 7 against the Padres and was optioned back to the minors the next day. Castellanos has started 11 games for Triple-A Reno this season, but he will likely serve out of Arizona's bullpen with right-hander Scott McGough being optioned to Reno in a corresponding move and ace Zac Gallen (hamstring) set to return from the injured list Saturday.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Optioned to Triple-A

The Diamondbacks optioned Castellanos to Triple-A Reno on Saturday. Castellanos was selected to the active roster Thursday, and he will now head back to the minors after giving up five earned runs in 2.1 innings during Friday's loss. He'll remain on the 40-man roster as he heads back to Triple-A, but the Diamondbacks may be hesitant to call him back up to the majors given his poor performance. Scott McGough will come up from Reno to fill the open bullpen spot.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Contract selected

The Diamondbacks selected Castellanos' contract from Triple-A Reno on Thursday. With Blake Walston (elbow) headed to the injured list, the Diamondbacks will call upon Castellanos to fill the open spot in their rotation. The 26-year-old right-hander has spent all season with Reno, posting a 4.57 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through 43.1 innings across nine starts. Assuming he slides right into Walston's place in the rotation, Castellanos is lined up to make his season debut Sunday in San Diego.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Invited to spring camp

Castellanos (elbow) was invited to major-league spring training. Castellanos will get an opportunity to begin spring training with the big-league squad after failing to see any action in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He'll be a long shot to crack the Opening Day roster and will likely start the 2024 campaign with Triple-A Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Undergoes surgery

Castellanos underwent Tommy John elbow surgery Monday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Castellanos had been an intriguing and emerging member of the rotation at the time of his elbow injury in late May. The right-hander could miss all of 2023.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Needs Tommy John surgery

Castellanos (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. This is one of the worst times of the year to need the procedure, as it will be a challenge for Castellanos to get all the way back before the end of the 2023 season. He logged a 5.68 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 32 strikeouts in 44.1 innings across 11 appearances for the big club.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Slower than expected rehab

Castellanos still feels tenderness in his elbow after numerous attempts to start a throwing program. The Diamondbacks placed Castellanos on the injured list with a right-elbow strain June 1, then two weeks later the right-hander was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said they've pulled back on pushing Castellanos, who is progressing slower than expected.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Transferred to 60-day IL

Castellanos (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. Castellanos hit the 15-day injured list at the start of June due to a strained right elbow. He still lacks a precise return date, though it's now clear that he won't be returning until the final day of July at the earliest. The transaction clears space on the 40-man roster for the Diamondbacks to select Buddy Kennedy's contract.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Extent of injury being determined

Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said the team is still trying to determine the extent of Castellanos' arm injury, which is being called a right forearm strain, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. At the time Castellanos was placed on the 15-day injured list, the team described the injury as to his elbow, but now it's being called a forearm strain. Arizona's website continues to identify the injury as to the elbow. Either way, it's been nearly a week since the Diamondbacks placed the right-hander on the IL, which is not a positive sign.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Picks up third win

Castellanos (3-1) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Friday. Castellanos has been incredibly consistent over his last three starts, as he's pitched 5.1 innings in each of those outings. While he was forced to settle for no-decisions in his last two outings, he got plenty of run support Friday and earned his first win of the season. The right-hander has a 4.29 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 35.2 innings over nine appearances (seven starts) in 2022, and he tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Dodgers on Thursday.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Surrenders two in no-decision

Castellanos didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Cubs, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Castellanos served up long balls to Rafael Ortega and Patrick Wisdom to lead off the first and second innings but was able to limit the scoring threats otherwise. Excluding a poor start April 28 against St. Louis, the 24-year-old has surrendered nine runs in 28.1 innings -- good for an impressive 2.81 ERA -- though he's yet to go six innings in any start. Castellanos is slated for a rematch with Chicago next weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Allows three runs in no-decision

Castellanos did not factor in the decision against Miami on Monday, completing 5.1 innings during which he allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four. Castellanos wasn't dominant in the performance, but he kept Arizona in the game and finished just two outs shy of a quality start. The right-hander gave up only one extra-base hit -- a fourth-inning homer off the bat of Garrett Cooper -- and threw 53 of 78 pitches for strikes. Castellanos will carry a 4.32 ERA into his next start, which is projected to come at home against the Cubs this weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Fires 5.2 shutout frames

Castellanos (2-1) earned the win Tuesday at Miami after allowing four hits with four strikeouts and zero walks across 5.2 scoreless innings. Castellanos gave up only two singles through five frames, and he allowed two more singles in the sixth before being pulled with two outs. It was the best start of the season for the 24-year-old, who surrendered five runs over two innings during his previous start. The right-hander has a 4.12 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB in 19.2 innings this season and tentatively lines up for a rematch with the Marlins on Monday.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Reinstated from paternity list

Castellanos was reinstated from the paternity list Wednesday. Castellanos had been on the paternity list since Sunday, but he'll rejoin the team prior to Wednesday's series finale against the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks haven't yet announced a starter for Thursday's game against the Cardinals, but Castellanos is a strong candidate to take the mound since he last pitched in Saturday's win over the Mets.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Moves to paternity list

Castellanos was placed on the paternity list Sunday. Castellanos picked up the win Saturday against the Mets after allowing two runs over five innings, and he'll now step away from the team for a few days to be with his family. The right-hander should return before his next turn through the rotation, which currently lines up for Thursday in St. Louis.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Snags first win of season

Castellanos (1-0) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Mets, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings while striking out five. It was a tidy performance from the right-hander, who tossed 53 of 69 pitches for strikes before exiting. Castellanos has looked good in his two starts, posting a 2.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over nine innings, but his 6:4 K:BB indicate he's been more lucky than dominant. Still, the Diamondbacks will likely keep him in the rotation as long as he's getting results.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Starting Saturday

Castellanos is the scheduled starter Saturday against the Mets, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. Castellanos is filling in as the fifth starter for a second consecutive turn of the rotation, although Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo stopped short of referring to the right-hander as a permanent starter. He fired four scoreless innings against the Mets last weekend, giving up one hit and three walks while striking out one.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Throws three innings Monday

Castellanos allowed three hits and struck out two over three scoreless innings in Monday's spring training game against Seattle. Castellanos made his first Cactus League start and looked good doing so. There is an open spot in the rotation, for which he was not expected to compete, but he could work himself into consideration along with Dan Straily and Tyler Gilbert. Straily's start Sunday did not go so well, and Gilbert has yet to appear in game.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Can't capitalize on run support

Castellanos did not factor in the decision against Colorado on Friday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four across 5.2 innings. Through five innings, the right-hander held Colorado off the scoreboard, at one point retiring 11 straight batters. His three-run homer in the third inning helped stake him to a seven-run lead, and it appeared that Castellanos was on his way to an easy win. However, he gave nearly the entire lead back in the sixth frame, when the Rockies tagged him for six runs on six hits, with the big blow being a Sam Hilliard three-run homer. The blowup marked not only the most runs Castellanos has given up in an inning this season, it also led to his highest run total for an entire outing on the campaign. He'll likely finish 2021 with a 4.93 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 29:15 K:BB across 45.2 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Humberto Castellanos: Notches win Saturday

Castellanos (2-1) got the win in Saturday's 7-3 victory over the Mariners, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. After struggling in his previous start against Seattle, Castellanos pitched much better Saturday in permitting only five total baserunners. He was bitten by the long ball as all three runs surrendered came on two Mariners home runs, but Arizona staked its starter to an early lead that it didn't relinquish. The 23-year-old may have done enough to earn another turn in the rotation and currently lines up to face Houston on Friday.
