Player Outlook
In his second MLB season, Alex Faedo showed some signs of progress. After posting a 5.53 ERA and 1.64 WHIP as a rookie in 2022, he lowered those figures to 4.45 and 1.05, respectively. Faedo didn't miss a ton more bats, as his K/9 climbed from 7.38 to just 8.07, but he was able to significantly cut down on the free passes. After posting a 4.19 BB/9 in 2022, the righty lowered that to 2.78. The next step for Faedo is to increase his workload. The 27-year-old has logged a total of just 118.1 innings across his two MLB campaigns. If Faedo can stay in the rotation all year, he could see that number climb upward rapidly, though it's no guarantee he'll stick as a starter. The Tigers should have Matt Manning (foot) and Casey Mize (elbow) rejoining the rotation, and Kenta Maeda also joined the team in the offseason. With the likes of Tarik Skubal and Reese Olson around as well, Faedo may end up on the outside looking in. As a result, his fantasy outlook is a bit murky at this point.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Opens with two scoreless frames

Faedo allowed one hit while striking out two batters in two scoreless innings as the opener in Detroit's win over Cincinnati on Saturday. Faedo began the Tigers' bullpen game and got the job done with two scoreless innings. It was the first time the right-hander has opened a contest this season. This is Faedo's first campaign as a full-time reliever in the majors, and he's posted a 3.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 35:15 K:BB over 39.2 frames.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Starting bullpen game

Faedo will start Saturday's game against the Reds. Faedo will throw the first pitch for Detroit, as the Tigers will rely on their bullpen to get them through Saturday's game in order to give their starters an extra day of rest. The 28-year-old righty served as a starter for two seasons before moving to the bullpen full-time in 2024, so he may be able to get through two or three innings before getting pulled.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Returns from injured list

The Tigers reinstated Faedo (hip) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Faedo made three rehab appearances at Triple-A Toledo, during which he gave up one run over three innings while striking out four batters and walking four. He owns a 3.38 ERA and 1.18 WHIP through 34.2 frames in the majors, and he'll slide back into a middle relief role now that he's been cleared to rejoin the Tigers' bullpen. Keider Montero was optioned to Toledo in a corresponding move.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Third rehab outing coming

Faedo (hip) is scheduled to make his third rehab appearance for Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. After tossing a scoreless inning in his first minor-league appearance, Faedo surrendered four hits, two walks and a run across 1.1 innings Saturday. He's been on the injured list since June 5 but is expected to rejoin the major-league roster soon. In fact, Tuesday's outing could be his last at Toledo.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Ready for rehab assignment

Faedo (hip) is scheduled to join Triple-A Toledo this week to begin a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. Faedo has been on the injured list for just under two weeks with right hip inflammation, so he'll likely need just one or two rehab appearances before he's cleared to rejoin the Detroit bullpen. After being deployed mostly in middle relief or long relief earlier in the season, Faedo had moved his way into higher-leverage spots prior to landing on the IL. In his last 11 appearances before being deactivated, Faedo notched one win and six holds.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Ineffective again Thursday

Faedo allowed three runs on three hits and a walk across 1.2 innings of relief in Thursday's 9-1 loss to the Blue Jays. He struck out one. After starting the season with a 2.25 ERA across his first 14 appearances, Faedo has allowed runs in his last three outings, and he has a 9.00 ERA during that stretch. The righty was a middling starter the last two years, and while he's looked a little better out of the bullpen, he may be regressing closer to his career 4.67 ERA. Faedo doesn't have a ton of fantasy value in his current middle-relief role, particularly given his recent struggles.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Allows two runs but earns win

Faedo (3-1) allowed two runs on three hits across 2.1 innings of relief but managed to earn the win in Monday's game against the Marlins. He struck out four. Faedo wasn't at his sharpest Monday, but the righty still managed to earn another win out of the bullpen. He's been racking those up at an impressive but likely unsustainable pace, as he came into the season with only three total wins at the MLB level the last two years despite making 24 starts. Faedo has been solid so far, though his long-relief role makes his fantasy value somewhat unpredictable moving forward.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Earns win Saturday

Faedo (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win Saturday against the Royals. After starter Casey Mize allowed three runs (two earned) over five innings, Faedo worked the sixth and seventh, and he continued to pitch well. The righty has a strong 2.55 ERA across 17.2 innings this season, and he's emerged as a capable long reliever for the Tigers. The role limits Faedo's upside, though he may be able to earn a few more wins here and there.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Logs two scoreless innings Monday

Faedo pitched two scoreless innings of relief in Monday's 5-0, 10-inning win over the Mets. He allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out three. Detroit needed some bullpen length to get the contest to extra innings and Faedo delivered. The righty has now logged 3.2 scoreless innings across two appearances this year, and it looks like he'll be asked to serve in a long-relief role moving forward. While Faedo may provide the Tigers a boost in this capacity, his fantasy value figures to be more up and down, as he'll have an unpredictable path to the occasional win or hold.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Will make Opening Day roster

Faedo will make the Tigers' Opening Day roster in a bullpen role, Julie Kreuz of MLB.com reports. Faedo pitched well this spring, compiling a 1.35 ERA across 13.1 innings, and it was enough to secure his first Opening Day roster spot in the majors. The one-time first-round pick hasn't found his footing as an MLB starter yet, though he could emerge as an effective reliever if his stuff plays up. However, Faedo likely won't see enough high-leverage work initially to warrant fantasy attention.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Shut down for season

Faedo will miss the rest of the season after undergoing a procedure Wednesday to repair his right middle fingernail, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Faedo underwent a procedure to remove a portion of the same fingernail earlier this season. He landed on the injured list last Tuesday due to a blister on his finger and had a slim chance of returning for the final game of the year, but he will now shift his focus to getting ready for the start of next season. Faedo finishes 2023 with a 4.45 ERA and 1.05 WHIP alongside a 58:20 K:BB through 64.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Lands on IL

The Tigers placed Faedo on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right finger blister. Faedo's move to the injured list is retroactive to Sunday, which leaves just enough room for him to return for the final game of the season Oct. 1. In the meantime, Brendan White will come up from Triple-A Toledo to fill Faedo's roster spot.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Shines in pair of relief outings

Faedo has worked out of the Detroit bullpen in his last two appearances Sept. 9 against the White Sox and Wednesday against the Reds, covering five scoreless innings while striking out six and allowing just one hit and two walks. Faedo has made just one of his four appearances in September as a starter, though the Tigers aren't yet dropping the right-hander from the rotation. Though he excelled in long relief of Tarik Skubal and Eduardo Rodriguez his last two times out, Faedo will likely end up serving as more of a bulk reliever Tuesday against the Dodgers. Miguel Diaz is slated to open the game and pitch an inning or two, and since he'll be available on five days' rest, Faedo looks like the most logical choice to serve as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Doesn't last long in start

Faedo allowed one run on three hits across 2.2 innings and didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Yankees. He walked one and struck out four. Faedo was actually fairly effective after allowing a leadoff home run to DJ LeMahieu, but the righty was limited to 40 pitches in his first start in nine days. The Tigers had said Faedo was slated for a multi-inning relief role down the stretch, but he's apparently still in the mix for some spot starts, with his next one potentially set for Sunday against the White Sox. Due to his middling performance so far and lack of a definitive rotation role, the 27-year-old can probably be avoided in most fantasy formats for now.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Slated for multi-inning relief role

Faedo will be used in a multi-inning relief role with the Tigers for the time being, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. It's possible Faedo will get a start or two in September if the situation dictates it, but for now the Tigers will see how he fares in a multi-inning bullpen role. He and Joey Wentz could piggyback for some outings in the coming weeks. Faedo holds a 4.98 ERA over 11 starts for Detroit this season.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Goes 4.2 innings in return

Faedo did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out five. All the damage against Faedo came in the third inning on homers by Carlos Correa and Joey Gallo. The 27-year-old right-hander was solid otherwise, though he'd depart in the fifth inning after throwing 85 pitches. Overall, Faedo is 2-4 this season with a 5.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 35:10 K:BB across eight starts (40.1 innings). He figures to stay in the rotation following Michael Lorenzen's trade to Philadelphia. Faedo's next start is tentatively lined up as a rematch with the Twins on the road.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Recalled, likely starting Wednesday

Detroit recalled Faedo from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. Faedo looks poised to slot into the Tigers' starting rotation Wednesday against the Twins. The 27-year-old right-hander has struggled to a 5.80 ERA in 35.2 innings (seven starts) this season at the major-league level and makes for a risky fantasy streaming option.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Sent back to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Faedo to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Though he was called up from Toledo on Sunday to make what amounted to a spot start versus the Padres, Faedo continued to make a case for a more permanent place in the Detroit rotation. Faedo blanked the Padres over six innings while issuing four walks and allowing one hit, lowering his WHIP to 1.04 through seven starts in the big leagues this season. While the stellar performance wasn't enough for Faedo to stick around in Detroit, he'll likely be first in line for a promotion if the Tigers lose another starter to the injured list or if rookie Reese Olson's struggles in his most recent start carry over to his upcoming outings.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Reinstated from IL

Faedo (finger) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday. Faedo will be back in Detroit's rotation for the first time since suffering a right middle fingernail injury in late May. The right-hander has made five starts in 2023, posting a 5.54 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 26 strikeouts over 26 innings. If he can control the long ball -- he's served up six homers this year -- positive regression should be in store for Faedo's ERA.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Rejoining rotation Friday

Faedo (finger) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday against the Blue Jays, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Faedo has been sidelined since late May following a procedure to remove his right middle fingernail but is ready to roll after one rehab start. He didn't pitch well in that rehab outing, yielding four runs on six hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. He also threw only 57 pitches and that, combined with his lengthy absence, likely means a truncated workload Friday.
