Player Outlook
A crowded Twins depth chart complicates Brooks Lee's path to playing time in the short term, but he doesn't need much more time in the minors from a developmental standpoint. The No. 8 overall pick in 2022, Lee has been essentially as advertised, with a .281/.355/.459 slash line, 20 home runs, seven steals and a 15.7 percent strikeout rate in 156 career games, primarily at Double-A and Triple-A. He may not have a true plus tool, but he could be at least average across the board, and his hit tool still has a chance to get to plus. The 5-foot-11 switch hitter can handle shortstop, and he could be a plus defender at second base, where his average arm is a better fit than third base or the outfield. Lee is better in real life than fantasy, as he doesn't project to hit 25 homers or steal double-digit bases, but he has a very high fantasy floor long term.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Hits first career homer in win

Lee went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 9-3 win over the Astros. Lee took Hunter Brown deep in the third inning for his first career major-league home run. The 23-year-old has hit the ground running with the Twins, going 7-for-15 with a home run and six RBI over his first four games. While it is unclear exactly how much time Royce Lewis (groin) will miss, the rookie has made the most of his time in the big-leagues so far.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Two hits in debut

Lee went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's 9-2 loss to the Tigers. Lee struck out in his first major-league at-bat but bounced back with two singles, including an RBI base knock in the seventh. Lee should be in the lineup nearly every day due to Royce Lewis being shelved with an adductor strain and deserves consideration in all mixed leagues.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Officially promoted

The Twins selected Lee's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday. Lee will get his first taste of major-league action, filling Royce Lewis' (groin) spot on the active roster. The 23-year-old has been lighting it up at St. Paul, owning a 1.029 OPS and a .306 ISO across 94 plate appearances. He should mix in with Jose Miranda at third base while Lewis is on the IL.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Expected to be called up

The Twins are expected to call up Lee prior to Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Declan Goff and Darren Wolfson of SKOR North report. The news would seem to point to another stint on the injured list for Royce Lewis (groin), although there's nothing official on that yet. The No. 8 overall pick in the 2022 Draft, Lee missed the first two months of the season with a back injury but has slashed an impressive .329/.394/.635 with seven home runs and a 13:9 K:BB over 20 games with Triple-A St. Paul. Lee has mostly played shortstop this season with St. Paul, but he also has experience at second and third base and would figure to take over as the Twins' primary guy at the hot corner if Lewis does indeed have to miss some time.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Begins rehab assignment

Lee (back) has been assigned to the FCL Twins on a rehab assignment, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports. Lee suffered a back injury toward the end of spring training that ended up being a herniated disc. He was expected to be out most of April and May during a rehab plan, so this is an encouraging sign. However, expect the Twins to be deliberate with his return, and it may be several weeks before he's back to Triple-A. When fully healthy and back to full speed, Lee could quickly become an option for the Twins at the major-league level.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Dealing with herniated disc in back

Lee has been diagnosed with a herniated disc in his back and is three weeks into a two-month rehab plan, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. Lee initially went on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A St. Paul with what was described at the time as back spasms, but subsequent testing revealed a more serious injury. There is optimism that he'll be available to play later this season, but no timetable for his return to game action has been established. Lee had seemed like a pretty good bet to make his major-league debut in 2024, but that would appear to be very much in question now.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Out 3-4 weeks with back injury

Saints manager Toby Gardenhire said Thursday that Lee will not join Triple-A St. Paul for 3-to-4 weeks as he gets treatment for back spasms, Patrick Borzi of MinnPost.com reports. The 2022 first-round pick looked good this spring with a .963 OPS but suffered a back injury last week. It sounds like he won't be an option to be called up to the majors should a need arise until at least late April or early May.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Sent to minor-league camp

The Twins reassigned Lee (back) to minor-league camp Friday. The 2022 first-round pick looked good this spring with a .963 OPS, but he was never going to make the Opening Day roster. Lee will head to Triple-A St. Paul, and a 2024 big-league debut is still very likely.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Exits game with back spasms

Lee was removed from Thursday's Grapefruit League game versus the Nationals due to a lower-back spasm, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Lee grounded into a double play in his lone plate appearance before exiting. Consider the young infielder day-to-day for the time being. Lee is expected to begin the season at Triple-A St. Paul.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Promoted to Triple-A

Lee was promoted Thursday to Triple-A St. Paul. The top-ranking prospect in the Twins' minor-league system, Lee earned the level jump after slashing .292/.365/.476 with 11 home runs, 31 doubles, 61 RBI, six stolen bases and 63 runs scored in 87 games this summer at Double-A Wichita. The fast-rising 22-year-old shortstop was the eighth overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Cal Poly.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Heating up at Double-A

Lee went 3-for-4 with a home run Wednesday for Double-A Wichita. He's hitting .344 with six home runs and a 1.047 OPS in 23 games since June 15. Lee is hitting .289 with a .853 OPS and 10 home runs overall for Wichita. He had a slightly underwhelming start to the season (.269 with four home runs and a .772 OPS through June 6) for a player who was drafted eighth overall in 2022, but he's improved as the summer has heated up.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Can't hold hot start at Double-A

Lee is hitting .269 with four home runs and a .772 OPS at Double-A Wichita. Lee began the season hot by hitting .323 with a .894 OPS through his first 23 games but has cooled by hitting .200 with a .617 OPS in his last 24 games. There's still plenty to like about his performance with good walk rates (10.3 percent) and strikeout rates (16.2 percent), but he hasn't been overly impressive. The 2022 first-round draft pick may need to add more power (four home runs, .429 slugging percentage) to become an elite prospect.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Reaches Double-A in draft season

Lee played his final two games of 2022 in Double-A, going 3-for-8 to round out a pro debut that saw him slash .303/.389/.451 with four home runs and a 16:20 BB:K across three levels of the minors. The No. 8 overall pick in this year's draft, Lee didn't look out of place at any of his three minor-league stops, continuing to show off the hitting ability that made him such a high draft choice. Just 21 years old, Lee will likely start 2023 in Double-A and could be pushing for a major-league roster spot by midseason, though Carlos Correa is set to man shortstop in Minnesota for the next two seasons.
