A crowded Twins depth chart complicates Brooks Lee's path to playing time in the short term, but he doesn't need much more time in the minors from a developmental standpoint. The No. 8 overall pick in 2022, Lee has been essentially as advertised, with a .281/.355/.459 slash line, 20 home runs, seven steals and a 15.7 percent strikeout rate in 156 career games, primarily at Double-A and Triple-A. He may not have a true plus tool, but he could be at least average across the board, and his hit tool still has a chance to get to plus. The 5-foot-11 switch hitter can handle shortstop, and he could be a plus defender at second base, where his average arm is a better fit than third base or the outfield. Lee is better in real life than fantasy, as he doesn't project to hit 25 homers or steal double-digit bases, but he has a very high fantasy floor long term.

The news would seem to point to another stint on the injured list for Royce Lewis (groin), although there's nothing official on that yet. The No. 8 overall pick in the 2022 Draft, Lee missed the first two months of the season with a back injury but has slashed an impressive .329/.394/.635 with seven home runs and a 13:9 K:BB over 20 games with Triple-A St. Paul. Lee has mostly played shortstop this season with St. Paul, but he also has experience at second and third base and would figure to take over as the Twins' primary guy at the hot corner if Lewis does indeed have to miss some time.

Lee suffered a back injury toward the end of spring training that ended up being a herniated disc. He was expected to be out most of April and May during a rehab plan, so this is an encouraging sign. However, expect the Twins to be deliberate with his return, and it may be several weeks before he's back to Triple-A. When fully healthy and back to full speed, Lee could quickly become an option for the Twins at the major-league level.

Lee initially went on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A St. Paul with what was described at the time as back spasms, but subsequent testing revealed a more serious injury. There is optimism that he'll be available to play later this season, but no timetable for his return to game action has been established. There's still plenty to like about his performance with good walk rates (10.3 percent) and strikeout rates (16.2 percent), but he hasn't been overly impressive.
