The 27-year-old has been back in a short-side platoon role for most of May with Jake Burger healthy, and Rivera's hitting just .240 (6-for-25) on the month with two RBI and five runs.

Rivera will be awarded a sixth consecutive start after he went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored in Wednesday's 4-1 win. Each of his past four starts have come at third base, and he'll continue to vie with Vidal Brujan for playing time at the position until Jake Burger (oblique) is cleared to return from the 10-day injured list. Burger began a rehab assignment Wednesday, and it's possible that he'll be ready to join the Marlins at some point during their six-game West Coast road trip that begins Friday in Oakland.

Rivera filled in for the injured Geraldo Perdomo (lower body), who missed the team's previous two Cactus League games. Jace Peterson started at shortstop Tuesday and Wednesday before Rivera. Perdomo's injury is not considered serious, and he's expected back in the lineup this weekend. There was a report early in camp that the Diamondbacks want Rivera to be the backup shortstop, but he's only played the position in winter ball and just a few innings this spring. That may partially be the reason why Arizona signed well-seasoned shortstop Elvis Andrus.

Rivera has also played shortstop in previous winters, but the 27-year-old has not logged an inning there during his career in professional ball in the States. The organization clearly values Rivera, who is out of options, and it doesn't want to risk losing him. The right-handed batter can fill in against lefties, which starter Geraldo Perdomo had a .579 OPS against in 2023. A best-case scenario would have Rivera behind Perdomo at shortstop and backing up at third and first base.

Rivera has had better luck in Triple-A this season, slashing .348/.378/.591 in 74 plate appearances, so he could make a quick return to Arizona if he gets going at the plate again. Buddy Kennedy was selected from Reno to take Rivera's spot on the active roster.

Rivera's 10th-inning single gave the Diamondbacks a brief lead before the Giants scored in the bottom of the frame. It was his sixth straight game with hit; he's 8-for-20 during the streak. A series of moves over the last few days impacts third base going forward. After placing Evan Longoria (back) on the injured list Saturday, Arizona traded infielder Josh Rojas to Seattle then acquired infielder Jace Peterson from Athletics. Peterson is essentially a Rojas replacement -- a left-handed bat that plays second and third base -- and could emerge as a platoon mate of Rivera.
