  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Clubs homer Saturday

Wells went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double in a loss to Toronto on Saturday.

The Yankees got beat pretty soundly Saturday, so Wells' two-run blast in the ninth inning didn't make much of an impact on the outcome. However, it was a positive development for the catcher's stat line after he had gone just 3-for-18 at the plate over his previous nine games. Wells is slashing a modest .213/.304/.346 with three homers, 13 RBI, 18 runs and a stolen base on the campaign, which may be causing him to fall more into a traditional backup role rather than remaining in a catching timeshare. Over New York's past six contests, Jose Trevino has started four times to Wells' two starts.

  • Yankees' Lou Trivino: Resumes throwing

Trivino (elbow) has resumed throwing from a mound, per MLB.com.

Trivino was shut down from his throwing program in late April due to inflammation in his surgically repaired right elbow, though doctors confirmed via imaging that the reliever hadn't suffered any new damage to his UCL. The right-hander is making his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in early May of 2023, and he isn't expected to be back in the Yankees' bullpen until after the All-Star break.

  • Yankees' Nestor Cortes: Struggles early in loss

Cortes (4-7) took the loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

Cortes surrendered a two-run home run to Vladimir Guerrero in the first inning and an RBI double to Alejandro Kirk in the fourth. Cortes had rattled off three consecutive quality starts entering Saturday, but this was also the second time in June the southpaw was unable to complete five innings. On the season, the 29-year-old owns a 3.51 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 98:19 K:BB over 105 innings and lines up to face the Red Sox next week.

  • Yankees' Ian Hamilton: Not yet throwing

Hamilton (lat) has been rehabbing but hasn't yet resumed throwing, per MLB.com.

Hamilton landed on the injured list June 18 due to a mid-grade right lat strain. Initial expectations were that he would be shut down from throwing for 3-to-4 weeks, so it's not surprising that the reliever hasn't yet reached that part of his rehab. Hamilton isn't likely to return to the Yankees' bullpen until after the All-Star break.

  • Yankees' Juan Soto: X-rays return negative

Soto's (hand) X-rays came back negative Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Soto sustained a right hand contusion sliding into home during Friday's game and was scratched from the Yankees' lineup Saturday. With his X-rays coming back negative, it appears as though Soto has avoided structural damage and a long-term injury. With a team off day coming Monday, it wouldn't be surprising to see Soto sit again Sunday as a precaution. Oswaldo Cabrera started in right field Saturday.

  • Yankees' Juan Soto: Scratched from lineup

Soto was scratched from the Yankees' lineup ahead of Saturday's game versus Toronto due to a right hand contusion, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Soto suffered the injury while sliding into home plate during the fourth inning of Friday's contest. He is slated to undergo imaging on his hand to see whether he's dealing with a more serious injury, and the Yankees should offer an update on his condition once they get the results back. In the meantime, Oswaldo Cabrera will enter the lineup as New York's right fielder and bat eighth.

  • Yankees' Nick Burdi: Scheduled for bullpen session

Burdi (hip) will throw a live bullpen session Sunday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

Sunday will mark the first time Burdi has thrown since landing on the injured list May 24 due to right hip inflammation. In 12 appearances before the injury, he posted a 1.86 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 9.2 innings. More bullpen sessions will be in store for the 31-year-old right-hander -- barring any setbacks after Sunday -- as he aims to return after the All-Star break.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Sitting Saturday

Trevino is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.

Trevino went 1-for-5 with an RBI double in the ninth inning of Friday's 16-5 win over Toronto. The lefty-hitting Austin Wells will start behind the dish Saturday and bat eighth against Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Works out on treadmill

Stanton (hamstring) resumed activity on a treadmill Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Given the nature of Stanton's injury, any work on a treadmill is a sign of positive progress, though manager Aaron Boone characterized the slugger's activity level as "not a lot." Stanton went on the injured list with a hamstring strain June 23 and subsequently said he expects to miss about four weeks of action, so he's not expected to be activated until after the All-Star break. The veteran had been swinging a hot bat prior to getting hurt, slashing .378/.439/.649 with three homers and nine RBI during a 10-game hitting streak.

  • Yankees' Jahmai Jones: Records three hits in another start

Jones went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI in Friday's 16-5 victory versus the Blue Jays.

Jones was plugged into the No. 9 spot in the order while serving as the team's designated hitter in his third start over New York's past four games. The 26-year-old responded with his first multi-hit game of the campaign -- in fact, his three knocks Friday equaled the amount of hits he had collected over his previous 18 plate appearances coming into the contest. Jones has been used mostly as a pinch runner and defensive replacement this season, though he could continue to see more opportunities in the short term while Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) remains on the injured list.

  • Yankees' Aaron Judge: Collects three hits Friday

Judge went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI in a 16-5 win against the Blue Jays on Friday.

It was unusual for Judge rack up three hits without any going for extra bases -- coming into Friday, 54 of his 88 hits on the season had been of the extra-base variety. Nonetheless, the slugger's ninth-inning, two-run single resulted in a sixth game with at least one RBI over his past 10 contests. Judge has been red hot over that stretch, slashing .382/.462/.853 with five home runs, 16 RBI and nine runs scored.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Homers in return to lineup

Torres went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 16-5 rout of Toronto.

Torres was held out of action Wednesday and Thursday following a prolonged slump, and the time off appeared to serve him well. The second baseman contributed to the team's offensive explosion Friday with a two-run blast in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Torres finished with his first multi-hit game in over a month -- he hadn't accomplished that feat since going 2-for-4 against San Diego on May 26.

  • Yankees' Juan Soto: Slugs homer No. 20

Soto went 2-for-4 with a walk, a three-run home run and three total runs scored in Friday's 16-5 rout of the Blue Jays.

The 25-year-old outfielder took Yusei Kikuchi deep in the sixth inning, giving the Yankees their first lead of the game before the floodgates opened late. The long ball was Soto's 20th of the season, and he has 60 RBI through 81 games -- only Aaron Judge (79) and Jose Ramirez (73) have driven in more runs in the American League so far this year.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: No-decision against former club

Stroman came away with a no-decision in Friday's 16-5 rout of the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.

The veteran right-hander made his big-league debut with the Jays in 2014 and had trouble keeping his composure in his return to Toronto, getting the hook after 88 pitches (52 strikes) and not sticking around long enough to benefit from a season-best offensive explosion by the Yankees. Stroman completed six innings only once in five June starts, but on the year he still sports a 3.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 70:43 K:BB through 95.2 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Reds.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Resumes throwing program

Schmidt (lat) has resumed his throwing program, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander took the first step in his throwing program Monday when he started playing catch, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. Schmidt has been out with a right lat strain and was transferred to the 60-day injured list June 18. Before the injury, he had gone 5-3 over 11 starts with a 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB over 60.2 innings.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Returns to lineup

Torres is batting fifth and playing second base Friday at Toronto.

Torres is 2-for-29 at the plate since June 14 and was given back-to-back days off to clear his head amid the slump. The second baseman is 10-for-26 (.385) in his career against Yusei Kikuchi, who's the Blue Jays' starting pitcher Friday.
