  • Nationals' CJ Abrams: Hits leadoff homer Saturday

Abrams went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double, a walk, two total runs and two total RBI in an 8-1 win against the Rays on Saturday.

Abrams didn't wait long to make his presence felt, swatting a 396-foot homer to lead off the contest. It was the 13th long ball of the campaign for the shortstop, and he's well on pace to surpass the 18 home runs he hit during his first full big-league season last year. Abrams hasn't been as successful as a runner this season -- he's just 13-for-22 in stolen-base attempts after going 47-for-51 in 2023 -- but he's otherwise shown growth in nearly every offensive category, slashing .278/.334/.498 with 20 doubles, five triples, 50 runs and 42 RBI through 328 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Jake Irvin: Registers another quality start

Irvin (6-6) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out five batters over six innings.

Irvin served up a solo homer to Brandon Lowe in the first inning, but that was the only run -- and only hit -- he allowed in the contest. The right-hander recorded his seventh quality start over his past eight outings, and he's posted an excellent 2.09 ERA and 0.93 WHIP during that span. Irvin didn't seem like he'd be a fantasy factor this year after posting a 4.61 ERA and 1.42 WHIP as a rookie last season, but he's provided strong ratios with a 3.03 ERA and 1.06 WHIP along with an 86:23 K:BB across 98 frames.

  • Nationals' Eddie Rosario: Resting Saturday

Rosario isn't in the Nationals' lineup for Saturday's game against Tampa Bay.

Rosario will get a breather Saturday after going 1-for-4 in Friday's series opener -- his first hit in his last four games. His absence will allow Harold Ramirez to serve as Washington's DH while batting sixth.

  • Nationals' Jesse Winker: Back in action Saturday

Winker (knee) is starting in left field and batting third Saturday against the Rays.

Winker was battling knee problems after getting his foot caught in the outfield grass during the first inning of Friday's game, but he appears to be in good enough shape to play Saturday. The 30-year-old has slashed .260/.377/.412 through 302 plate appearances this season, though he may see limited work in the outfield after top prospect James Wood officially joins the Nationals for his MLB debut Monday.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Doubles twice, steals in win

Young went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and a stolen base in a 3-1 loss to the Rays on Friday.

The 24-year-old doubled in the third inning and again in the seventh. He then stole third and scored on an errant throw by Rays catcher Alex Jackson. Since June 21, Young has four multi-hit efforts and nine runs scored in seven contests. On the season, he is hitting .272 with one home run, 18 RBI, 40 runs scored and 19 steals in 240 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Mitchell Parker: Strikes out five in loss

Parker (5-4) took the loss against the Rays on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings.

Parker surrendered a solo home run to Jose Siri in the second inning and another run on an RBI single by Isaac Paredes in the third. He rebounded with two perfect innings but was pulled after the fifth at 92 pitches. The southpaw has completed at least five frames in 12 of 14 starts this season and now owns a 3.32 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 63:18 K:BB in 2024. He lines up for a home matchup against the Mets next week.

  • Nationals' Jesse Winker: No structural damage in knee

Winker said after Friday's game versus Tampa Bay that imaging had revealed no structural damage in his right knee, and he's hoping he'll be able to play Saturday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Winker tweaked his knee after his foot got caught in the outfield turf while running down a flyball during the first inning Friday. He had to come out of the game early and was noticeably limping as he walked to the dugout, though it appears he managed to avoid a significant injury. Winker's defensive duties could be limited the rest of the season, as top prospect James Wood is expected to join the big-league roster Monday and take over in left field.

  • Nationals' Jesse Winker: Early exit Friday

Winker was removed from Friday's game against the Rays with what appears to be a right ankle injury, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Winker sustained the injury running into the wall while tracking down a flyball in the first inning. Though he was able to walk off under his own power, he sported a noticeable limp. Ildemaro Vargas replaced Winker in left field.

  • Nationals' Trevor Williams: Still not throwing

Williams (elbow) has yet to start a throwing program, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Williams was placed on the 15-day IL on June 4 with a right flexor strain but remains shut down from throwing. It's safe to assume Williams won't be able to return until after the All-Star break. DJ Herz should continue to make starts in place of Williams.

  • Nationals' James Wood: MLB debut coming Monday

The Nationals will call up Wood from Triple-A Rochester prior to their game Monday against the Mets, Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan reports.

Wood is one of the top prospects in all of baseball and has had a phenomenal season at Rochester, slashing .346/.458/.578 with 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases over 51 contests. He also boasts a 17.3 percent walk rate and just an 18.2 percent strikeout rate in the International League, which is particularly impressive considering he's just 21 and he fanned at a 31.5 percent clip between High-A Wilmington and Double-A Harrisburg in 2023. Wood is capable of handling all three outfield spots, but the expectation is that he'll be used mostly in left field by the Nationals.

  • Nationals' Aldo Ramirez: Kicks off rehab in FCL

Ramirez (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Thursday.

Ramirez, whom the Nationals acquired in July 2021 in a deal that sent outfielder Kyle Schwarber to the Red Sox, hasn't pitched in affiliated ball since that season. He missed the entire 2022 season with a sore elbow that later required Tommy John surgery, which kept him out for all of 2023 and for the first three months of the 2024 campaign. Ramirez remains on Single-A Fredericksburg's 7-day injured list and will likely rejoin the Nationals' Carolina League affiliate after making multiple rehab appearances in the FCL.

  • Nationals' Jose Ferrer: Beginning rehab assignment

Ferrer (shoulder) was sent to the Nationals' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate Thursday to begin a rehab assignment.

Ferrer has been out all season with a strain of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder but has finally been cleared for game action. The lefty's rehab assignment should be fairly lengthy given how much time he's missed, and he's not a given to be added to the major-league roster once his time on the 60-day injured list is over.
